Engine "miss" and dies when shift
A little over a week ago, I was driving along and engine quit as if I had turned off the ignition. It would restart after a brief rest and die again shortly thereafter. There were no other symptoms at that time. I replaced the CPS with a gray one from O'Reilly's.
After CPS replacement, the engine would miss. Almost like a cylinder wouldn't fire, and I noticed brief, intermittent clatter. The clatter sounds like the normal PSD valve clatter only louder. I thought I got a bad CPS, so I replaced it immediately with another gray one from O'Reilly. It is still missing occasionally and the intermittent clatter is still present. It also occasionally dies when I move the gear select lever from park to reverse, reverse to drive, or drive to park. It doesn't do it every time I shift. When it dies, it is sudden...like I turn the ignition off. I can restart the engine immediately.
A had a diesel mechanic I know take a look at it. He hooked it up to his fancy scanner and couldn't pull any codes (none stored). He ran an injector buzz test "I think he called it a contribution test" and all injectors buzzed normally.
I replaced the fuel filter as a precaution. The old one didn't look bad and the new one hasn't helped the problem.
The clatter and miss seem more frequent when the engine is cold, but it still happens intermittently after warming.
A little more on the engine:
2000 PSD 7.3L, auto trans, just under 265K on the odometer, all fluid levels are within normal limits on the dip sticks. Oil changes are religiously every 5K with regular dino oil. I lack about 500 miles until the next change. About 4 years ago, I replaced a bad injector driver module that shorted from a bad wire harness. I replaced the main engine wire harness at the same time. Absolutely no other mechanical issues until now.
Any thoughts on what is causing these issues?
All help will be most appreciated.
What I mean is, I am thinking that maybe the CPS wasn't the problem when it died on me over a week ago. Could it have been something else, and I unnecessarily replaced the CPS?
Isn't there a quick-fix for those? It seems like a read something on here a long time ago about using a zip-tie to fix a problem with the UVCH plugs.

Your original response was correct.
The two (2) camshaft position sensors I got from O'Reilly's were junk.
I called my local Ford dealership this morning, gave 'em my VIN, and got them to replace the CPS under the recall. No charge. Turns out I had another recall on a speed sensor on the cruise control also. I was in & out in under an hour.
The Ford CPS seems to have solved all of the issues I was having. She is running strong, idles smooth, no misses, no extra clatter, and it hasn't died on me when I switch gears. I think I will still do the $.50 mod as a precaution. Can't hurt, right?
Thanks again!
