1997 PSD wouldn't start...

1997 PSD wouldn't start...
I am new to FTE as of right now, I am a life long hot rodder and Ford freak... however my 1997 F350 PSD is my first diesel and this is a steep learning curve.
the problem: this morning I go out to start my truck and the dash lights come on per usual, WTS light comes on and goes off as it should. I hit the key and not a sound, no click at the solenoid or starter, nada.
I fart around with trying to jump the solenoid with a wire and the key on, nothing at all - couple sparks from the wire and no starter action/click/anything
I disconnect all the jump wires, experimental items and I get in about ten minutes later and it starts right up... hmmmm any ideas.
