C4 Issues

Hey, need some help. I have a tranny out of a 79 T-Bird, trying to rebuild. i don't think it came in the car, can't find no id tag. only thing i see is the numbers D2OP7006 CA6 stamped on the side of the tranny where the kick down / gear lever is can anyone tell me what those numbers and letters mean, also when i tore it down i pulled the reverse- high piston out and a small ball fell out can anyone tell me anything about this. i'm assuming it is a check ball.

Thanks

The check ball fell out of the piston for the drum, look for a small hole in the piston, it goes in there and it shouldn't fall out. It may have to be staked back in or the piston has to be replaced.

Without it no 3rd or reverse.

You may not be able too, some pistons use a small retainer and some use just a small hole with the the edge of the hole staked over to prevent the ball from falling out. If there is no machined area at the top of the hole then you should be able to just stake it back in.

1977/79 Thunderbird could have either a C4 (11 trans pan bolt holes), FMX (14) or C6 (17).

The D2OP-7006-CA6 casting number taken from the trans case only refers to the case itself, it's not the trans ID number.

While D2OP refers to 1972 Torino, that means nothing as there were two different C4 trans cases used 1972/79 in FoMoCo Passenger Cars. One has a dipstick filler hole, one does not.

Originally, the TRANS ID tag was bolted to the servo cover, but by now...many are MIA.

C4 transmissions have a separate bell housing.
C6 has an integral bell housing.
FMX has a cast iron main case.
