I just installed an AFE stage 2 on my 04 f150. I was driving down the freeway and I decided to step on it and it made a loud hum sound and it had a vibration I could feel through the peddle. It was so loud and aggressive I pulled off the road to see if something came apart. Everything looked ok and all my bolts and such are tight.
Do you have any tunes to go along with that intake? The 04 & 05 MYs are notorious for running lean when an aftermarket intake is installed on the truck without a reprogram of the ignition. Put the stock intake back on and see if you can replicate the problem.
Ok sounds good. It just poped a check engine code last night. Not sure what it was. I don't have a tune to go with it so I will look into that. Shouldn't the comp. adjust to more air entering the system by allowing more fuel? I will chec the code and get back to u though. Thanks!
I unplugged the battery and it reset. I am about to go pull up the history though and see what it was. I ran it with the stock one on and both the sound and vibration was gone. I also called four wheel parts and they said the sound and vibration is normal, it is just the intake sucking air. If I run it without a tuner is that really bad for it would you say? I know running something to lean is never a good idea but what determines to lean. any recommendations?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

<o></o> Thanks MCDavis for the help, I appreciate it!<o></o>
Just had the code read, and MCDavis was right! It was a too lean code on bank 2. Now the question is ways to get around that? Do I need to tune it? Is that the only way it will ever work?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
<o></o> If I do what is a recommended aftermarket tuner? <o></o>
<o></o> Or does anybody know a shop in southern cali that will tune my truck for me? (for a decent price.)<o></o>
Mike Butler is the man you want to chat with. A SCT X3 programmer with Mike's tunes will run you about $400. If you want to keep that engine bling...errr...intake, then you need tunes so that you won't throw codes and hurt your truck.
If you cannot come up with the $$$ right now, then put the stock intake back on until you can afford the programmer and custom tunes.
allright sounds good I will do that. I didn't anticipate paying for a tune, so i will just save the money up right now and go from there! thanks for all the advice, but one more question. could i buy A edge or A bully dog or something like that and change the peramiters enough or do I need a custome tune?
an Edge might do the trick...but then you are playing with fire IMO
spend the money on a Gryphon (custom tuned Edge), or do a SCT tuner.
As far as the intake noise itself, that is normal. Especially with the intake you have. Most CAI's will make some drone. But the more extreme ones like yours produce alot of drone
allright sounds good. I just don't understand why AFE markets their stuff by saying its bolt on with nothing else required. if I would have known all this came with it I would have thought twice on buying it. I am gonna save up though, I like how it runs now with it on. thanks for all the advice though.
Chandler and Tylus - still in jail, otherwise I'd rep ya!

Because if they told you you needed another $400-600 in parts, would you have bought it?
I have another question for you - did you look at the dyno graphs for the AFE? Did you happen to notice the RPM range for the 5-12 hp increase?
