Power Steering Column Help

I'm using the PS column from a '71 F250. The issue I'm running into is that the "U" bracket that bolts the column to the dash isn't the same as my '65.

You can see in the picture below, my '65 column (Caribbean Turquoise), the "U" goes all the way around the column. The '71 column (red), the bracket only goes part of the way around. This means that it won't bolt up to the bottom of the dash without some kind of spacer.

I was thinking that I could also drill out the 4 spot welds from each column and have the bracket from my 65 rewelded to the '71 column.

Anyone else run into this? Here is a picture of the two.

You need to drill out the spot welds on your old bracket and weld it to the new column if you want it to look correct. You can get by temporarily with longer bolts. I still need to do the same thing to mine.

I figured as much. I'll have to find someone to weld it on for me.

you can also slide the shafts out and swap them, most of the time. I had a 74 column that went in with the ps swap somebody did and I located a 4speed column out of a 67 and swapped the shafts. I do need to find the clamp that attaches to the dash, too...

I was going to do that but the end of the '71 tube has the bearing right at the end. My '65 tube, the end bearing is up in the tube about a 1/2" which puts a gap between the steering wheel and the collar. I can make it work by adjusting the collar on the shaft, but that means that the steering wheel is 1/2" closer to me (when it's already too close now).

The other reason I want to use the '71 tube is that it is an automatic column and when I install the C6 this summer, I plan to use the automatic collar to use the shifter.

Guess I'm finding a welder.
