If I were to swap in bigger injectors what I have to do besides just that?? The truck wouldn't just run bigger injectors would it? It'd have to be programmed right?
I don't know why you would want to do that....unless you have some very, very high hp mods..........
Even if you did some mods including camshaft, etc, many times the ECM can be re-programmed to have the existing injectors spray just a fraction longer giving the same fuel delivery as if you had gone from 19 lb injectors to 22 lb units.
With out doing substantial mods to the engine, yes, the ecm would have to be re-programmed to basically choke the injectors down.
There is no need to put bigger injectors in these trucks. The stock factory engine wouldn't even run them without a buch of high horsepower modifications (camshaft, headers, manifold, etc.). I don't even know how much higher you could actually go up in injectors. My 93 lightning that is built out the *** only has 30lb injectors in it.
Reason I asked is I went to the dealership to have my injectors flushed, for free. My buddy is a techy there, and I figured why not since he offered. He was looking at them and told me they were not factory injectors, and that they was 30lb injectors. My truck when I bought it had 125k on it. It now has 144k. Since I've put cam phasers, lash adjusters, tensioners, vct solenoid's both sides, and brand new spark plugs in it. It has a new fuel filter as well. Since the day I got it, it has always gotten terrible gas mileage and ran like no other. I have a few friends with 04-08's and racing head to head, none of them can catch this. Its faster then crap. However I know nothing about this truck, other then there is no reason that thing should get 10 mpg, and if I don't put Premium in it, it gets even worse. I haven't got an Edge for it, but want yet this throttle lag everyone complains about is non exist on this truck. Even when it idles it sounds totally different from my friends with similar setups, it almost has a mild lope to it, always has. At this moment I got nothing but an ABS light on. The truck runs great, like I said it runs like no other.
So that is why I was asking if its possible that someone started to make this truck into something bad *** before the cam phasers started ticking, and realized it... To my knowledge its stock like I said, but my techy friend at ford, even showed me the color differences and he went to the parts room and got injectors for a stock 5.4L 3v and they weren't the same at all compared to mine. Also I do got headers... they was on the truck when I got it... they aren't real aggressive ones though.
So just trying to figure out what might be done to my truck.
If it runs as good as you say it does then it would almost have to have something else done to it to run 30lb injectors. But then again I may be wrong.
I just can't see how it would run really good with that much extra fuel.
I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will chime in soon.
the 5.4 3v and 4.6 3v are essentially the same motor with different intakes and displacement. Sounds likely that the prior owner put in CAMS and custom tuned your truck with new injectors.
If you ever get bored, pull the valve covers off and get the part #'s for your camshafts. You might have the Ford Hot Rods installed, or maybe a mild Comp Cam. A couple of guys have installed the FRPP Hot Rods in their 5.4 3v trucks. Sounds wicked, and with supporting mods/tuning, it's good for about +40 HP.
as far as gas mileage and performance, I suggest you unplug your battery and let it sit for 30 minutes. This will reset the PCM memory. It will force the truck to relearn driving styles and the trans will begin adapting to your driving style.
This is something that every person should do immediately after buying a used 04-08 F-150. It deletes the driving parameters the prior owner had, and it will allow the truck to learn your style.
