Anybody got any ideas how to soundproof without spending big bucks? Id like to do my roof, floor, and doors but the Excursion is a bit big so alot of material is needed.Just need it a little bit quieter if I could. Thanks for the help.
One thing that I did which improved the sound was to put in vinyl tubing or latex tubing in the weatherstripping on all doors and back barn doors and hatch. This eliminated the door rattles going over bumps and helped secure the doors tighter. I noticed a huge difference after doing this mod.
Very little material is needed. If you live in extreme cold climates, you'd be better using surgical latex tubing. I live in warmer climates, so I just used vinyl tubing. You'll just need to slam the door harder to close it.
Go to eBay and do a search for sound deadener or dampener and you'll come up with a bunch of stuff. I saw a thread on here where someone used some material from Home Depot or one of those places, I just don't recall what it was.
fyi- most of the aftermarket sound insulation products are asphault or stryene based...both will ignite easily (from an engine compartment fire) and I have seen more than one vehicle that if they didn't have thiese products installed could have been saved (so to speak)

Someone posted a poormans sound deadener that you could get cheap at Home Depot or Lowes.....foilbacked and everything
When I got my seat recovered the dude at the shop was putting that in his personal Corvette. He said it's cheap and works well. The only drawback was he had to use adhesive to glue it down. Once you have everything removed it still looked super easy.
JH818,
What diameter tubing did you have good luck with? Also, when you installed it on/in the weather stripping, where did you wedge it? I removed the strip around the door to see if I could access inside the weatherstrip, and there is no access. Seems the only place to install, is to wedge between the weather strip and the crease that grabs the body metal...
I had used 3/8" OD, 1/4" ID vinyl tubing...get smaller if you can. I got what was available at Home Depot at the time. I installed it by cutting an opening across the weatherstripping like cutting a loaf of bread. I used water with dish detergent as lubrication.
When you cut, don't cut at the top of the door frame. Do it at the back of the door against the pillars. If you cut at the top like I did, you will have leaking when it rains. You won't need to go all the way around the whole door. Just do the back corners where it bends 90 degrees. It's almost impossible to go all around the whole doorway.
