I've done quiet a bit of looking but can't find any info on this. I've got a '05 Eddie Bauer with the steering mounted controls. All the buttons work except for the volume button. The down position works fine, and one click makes the stereo volume go down one interval, the up button is sort of spongy and if pressed hard enough makes the volume go up, but in jumps of 4-6 increments, and there's no clicking noise as with the down.
Are the buttons removable? Anyone fixed a similar situation?
I looked it up on FordParts.com...all I could find was:
Part Number: 14K147
Part Description: Speed control, radio, and A/C control in steering wheel; with jumper harness
Can't find an associated diagram, and other searches I did for replacing the backlighting doesn't show the switch assembly (stereo/cruise or cruise alone) doesn't show it can be taken apart.
I'd bet a beer though if you got the airbag out and the switch assembly apart you could get in there and clean it out. My bet is someone spilled something on it and it just needs cleaned.
If you have a pick-and-pull area near you maybe you can get one cheaper (Ford wants about $167 per the web site) and examine the switch itself to get a hit if you can "pop" off the buttons.
I haven't tried to remove the radio style buttons, but I did remove the older style cruise-only buttons on my old steering wheel after I took it off just to look under there. They had little pins in the center on each side that they snapped in with.
I'm pretty sure they just pop off because I remember seeing a picture with one missing one time. Just be careful prying it up...
Ditto about pick-n-pull. Some Excursions, some Super Duties, some Expeditions, Town Cars, Navigators, some Grand Marquis', should all have the same switch system, even if the wheel itself looks different.
