97 7.3L powerstroke Issues

Ok, i got two brand new issues that i have no idea where to begin. I dont have a repair manual for this truck but i will before i grab any wrench's.

I am a millwright mechanic of 15 years and a Fullsize Bronco off-road enthusiasts so i am not afraid to fix things.

However, i need help identifying my issues before i go replacing things that dont need/ or wasting time taking apart stuff for nothing.

Here it goes... Both problems started this morning and i wont/havnt driven it cause im scared to damage other stuff

Problem #1 ( started 1 week ago)

Major fuel leak running down the back side of the motor to the ground. My drivway is slight uphill so naturally it goes back. Evertime i start it, run it a few, shut it off, i get about 1 qrt of fuel on the ground. No visual fuel anywhere on the top of the motor around where i change the fuel filter.

Problem #2 (started this morning)

Looking online i have identified what is called a HPOP, not sure what the hell a HPOP is... But with my stethoscope this thing is Growling so very loud. I almost thought it was a cam end bearing until i got out the steth.
What is this noise mean? can someone briefly describe the function of a HPOP/what it is/does. And What might my next troubleshooting step be?

What happened? A= i started my truck this morning, let it warm up. put it in revers and i herd a growl. With my Auto tras hesitate once in load/gear the growl went away. i thought no big deal. I was coming to a coast to stop sign and it growled again. I turned around and put it in the drive way. I put it reverse again and it growled louder until the gear kicked in(1/2 a sec.) I had my wife do this a couple times while i listened different areas with a stethoscope. It is right on the big rectangle box at the front of the motor which i later identified as a HPOP.

any help thanks =)

HPOP
High Pressure Oil Pump
Supplies high pressure oil to the injectors. They're expensive.

so it growling means? replace it? i just read some other thread and they talked about taking the pulg off the top and filling it with oil... but it was a different thread topic.

this is my first diesel so im not sure how it all functions together. I have rebuild a few 351w and one 460. But this 7.3L has all kinds of stuff on it im not sure what it is.. i just found out yesterday that they use an external Vacume pump.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...fuel-leak.html Click on this link and have a read, may help with fuel leak.
For the HPOP problem maybe post on the Power Stroke page in the Diesel Section (further down the main forum page from here) for specialist help.
Good luck.

OK , found the fuel leak, easy fis no problem... thanks for the link , that lead me in the right direction...

I am going nuts with this Growling, it is soo loud. Forget the HPOP its not that. this noise just resonates through it.

I just climbed under my truck and OMG is it loud. I pulled off the little flywheel inspection plate and it sounds like maybe the torque conv. growling...

Can a torque Conv make a noise like that? i've never had one fail before, infact idont even know whats in one lol.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...some-pics.html Click on this link to see what is inside a converter (failed one). Different engine from yours but same trans.
However I think I would first lift off the accessory drive belt (serpentine belt) and see if the noise goes away. If it does then turn every pulley by hand looking for noise/roughness.

Yes, the E4OD is huge. Can be done however with a floor jack and trans adapter for it. Don`t envy you the task. Make sure you check every other possibility first.

Did you check the torque converter to flex plate nuts, are they all tight?

If they are while still won't prevent you from removing the trans, least moving it back some, the flex plate might be broke around the bolts hold it to the motors main shaft.

The fact the noise goes away under load has me suspect one of those two may be the cause of the troubles down there.

Ok , i just pulled the inspection plate.. everything looks tight and very clean as it should cause i just payed $2700 bucks for the new trany 30k ago. I dont see any cracks anywhere, but with the ins plat off and motor running it is even louder.

One fck'd thing i do see is the A-holes that changed it striped out the damn nuts where the TC bolts to the FW.

(last time I "quoted" someone said such things as that I got spanked for it, I see it still shows in my "user CP" to this date even)

What do you mean by that? You found its been double nutted or ?

You stated everything is tight but then state stripped nuts?

My boys bought me one of them wonder sockets for Xmas one year, you know them "tools" family tend to buy a guy? I've had it for couple three years now.

Its one of them sockets with all the pins in it, well you'd be surprised how well it actually works. Its taken off exhaust system nuts that had never had been removed before, nuts/bolts had corroded and rusted away to dang near "round" even tapered to a point.

I've used it to bust loose bolts with enough force with it I thought sure it'd explode/split the outer wall on it shoot pins all over the place and or bend/crush/bind up those pins due to force placed on it render it useless in a hurry.
Nope bust bolt loose then flush pins clear of dirt and rust with WD-40 and its ready to go again, no damage to it and it did not loose its grip and slip.

It astounds me every time I use it, I wouldn't have given it a prayer when I first seen it its one of them type of things ya know!
In fact first time I used it my oldest boy was working with me and suggested it, I figured that do it in and I'd be able just pitch it get it over with.

Nope use it now and then, still as a last ditch effort before cutting one off yea. I can post a pic if anyone like to see it, I have no idea who made it or if its marked or if they still sell them or not.
Anyway I'd bet it remove them nuts for ya.
