Sounds like a lack of power either into or out of the coil. Without enough spark, you will get backfire from unburned fuel in the hot exhaust system. Check your coil connections and make certain that your alternator is working under a load. If the voltage drops significantly when electrical accessories are turned on, you could have lost the voltage regulator in the alternator. If the problem is there, its alternator time. If the voltage is good, the coil is on its way out and is drawing more amperage from the alternator to compensate for the lack of output. Thereby effectively reducing the available amperage for the remainder of the electrical system.
I would also look at your battery cables. if they show any sign of corrosion you might think about replacing those with good 1 gauge wire. but it sounds like your alt is going. also what kinda of carb are you running, if it has a lot of miles on it , could be needing a rebuild
Soundl like an alterntor to me too. Might want to the wires and connections for fraying first. Specifically check: Battery Cables, Coil wires, alternator cable, ignition wires - if it's not one of those, odds are bad alternator. An oil leak could also gunk up the alternator hot or ground connection. Some auto parts stores will test your alt for free, to eliminate that.
