Hello
Again I am contemplating purchasing a Navigator. I want the one with the 32valve engine so I narrowed my search to 99 and later and my budget will probably stop me at the 01 year. What are some of the common problems you have. From my searching I see that the air suspension system can be one but it seems some replace it with new components or convert it to spring/shock set up. On another thread I noticed a few Expedition owners reported problems with the rear ends. What are the highway and city mpg's that you get? Do you think that mileage around 120K-150K is okay to start with? Any thing else I should look for?
Well i have not had any major problems with mines, besides the basic tune up, tho i did replace the sway bar links 20$ x2 and all shocks, my air suspention still works nothing else........
My 01 is running true and strong. My only observation is the radiator supports look like they're starting to rot.
X2 for me. The air suspension has had a few minor issues here and there
but it's worth the effort to keep if you ever need to carry a load or pull a heavy trailer. My Navigator has proven to be a great vehicle and I have no regrets over buying it.
Got 189,000 miles. Great vehicle for a family man. MPG is around 14-15 with a mix of mostly city some highway. Get around 17-19 on extended trips. Came with DVD, (kids love it) and 2WD. Here are my issues so far, Rear Diff. cover leak. Did not fix quickly enough so I do have some noise and a low rumble at some speeds. I should have got it fixed sooner, my fault. I do most maintenence on my vehicles. I've replaced the front and rear brake pads and replaced front rotors once due to a warped rotor. I've also replaced all 4 shocks, and all 4 swaybar end links and swaybar bushings. Rides much better. The vehicle threw a code and developed a sporadic misfire just last month so I assummed it needed new plugs. While removing the plugs I noticed 3 spark plug wells were half full of oil, so I replaced the valve cover/ spark plug well gaskets. Had to remove the upper intake and replace that gasket as well. While in there I also replaced 2 O2 sensors the EGR valve, PCV valve, EGR Pressure sensor, 2 COPs and all COP boots . That was a job But with so many miles on the NAV I'm not too concerned. As long as you make sure it has been serviced consistently you should not have too many problems. Dealer service on these SUVs is high so unless you know something about working on vehicles you will pay over the long run. I was quoted 1100-1400 at the Ford Dealer for 4shocks. It cost me 250.00 to do it myself. I was also quoted 650.00 for new sparkplugs. I replaced everything I listed above for around 450.00. I also had an AC problem a couple years ago which cost me around 800.00 at the dealer to fix. Overall it's a very comfortable long hauler, with a very strong motor. I love it.
