A set of Ford Racing spark plug wires, MSD cap and rotor and Accel U Groove spark plugs make for a great tune up. New fuel filter, check/replace air filter is a must. You would be surprised at the difference when you remove and clean the throttle body if it's as dirty as mine was. If your muffler has a leak in it already, a new chambered muffler is a no brainer. Not a huge performance increase but all this together will keep her running great, sound a little better and give you the best MPG's your gonna get. I was able to advance the base timing on my '96 460 to 14 degrees. Did notice a little more throttle response.
Fully synthetic lubricants in your drive train will loosen it up a bit. People have their own preferences on brands, but I have always used Mobil 1. Motor oil, transmission fluid, rear end gear oil and power steering fluid. If you do not know the age and history of your vehicle it would be a good start to maintain and get a hold of its condition.
synthetic lube is great. But if you have a minor oil leak, it will leak more... not to mention if you dont have an oil leak and you add synthetic you might develop one.
Well I've never heard of synthetic leaking more than conventional oils, but if you do have an aged motor it might get more blow-by because of its superior lubrication.
I don't know about synthetics causing leaks, the main advantage of synthetic over conventional is that it leaves a think film all over parts, thus eliminating the initial metal on metal contact after a motor has been sitting a bit. That and Synthetics are developed to withstand more extreme temperatures. If you drop weight in the oil then yes, it will develop more leaks. But i think the synthetic oil will leak more is like the old tale about a battery going dead on a cement floor.
I have a '92, 302- F150 -4x4 ext.cab w/3:55's. I did the six liter tune with the set spark plug wires, MSD cap and rotor and copper spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter as it said and I did advance base timing to 14 degrees. Great improvement , I have better throttle response and better mpg's. rla2005 and Terpfords, spoke of "Ditching the bottleneck factory converter is a good start to uncorking that engine " I always thought that removing it would improve get up and go and mpg's a little. But is it better to remove or gut the converter or replace it with a high flow cat, and if the high flow cat is the way to go, which converter / muffler combo is best ,,,,,or is the converter with no muffler best.

First, "92", whatchu got room for? :)
You mention a Six Liter Tuneup, is it a Bronco?
{oops... I see it's an F150 LOL }
{x2 what Edge sez, sounds like a good plan to me}
I don't know what effect it had on mine, I never really drove the
'91 Bronco faster'an a mile an hour moving it around, lining it up
for towing etc, before I tore into it. (it came with an E4od -ick-)
I made a Y-pipe from scratch but I'd go with a Flow-Master Y-pipe
if you got the money for it to start with, I was just fartin' around
having fun... :)
...that's what it looks like inside with the cat removed.
I just capped it with 2+1/2" exhaust pipe to form a hick Y-pipe...
Then used a 45" straight through Thrush glass pack...
...that's just a 4" clamp.
Sounds good and it's not too loud, I don't get dirty looks and
hardly ever set off car alarms anymore, they've gotten better
in the last 5 years or so. Got the same setup on my '75 F150
with a 360FE+T18. Back in the old days it'd set off car alarms
quite a bit. LOL :)
But is it better to remove or gut the converter or replace it with a high flow cat,
best to ya '92
I think the best advice is to get a single 3 way hi-flo cat (i have a magnaflow), then replace teh 2 cats on the stock Y-pipe with this one and a custom Y-pip that your local exhaust shop fabs up. Then you can run whatever muffler you like. Just my .02
Alvin, Nice work on your Y pipe. You and Edgethis both have given me good choices. I appreciate your reply's.
Alvin as I get older I also am " fartin' around having fun." Although my wife say's mostly just fartin'.
Usually, around 40 year old IH Cub Cadets tractors having fun and welding up and making parts for them, so I like to see when guys make things up themselves. But the question I have about your Photos, If daily drivers in AZ. look as clean underneath as yours does . I'm sellin the farm............ Thanks '92

Since you're a farmer and do-it-yourselfer -and- not from NY or Kalifornia...
Come on out! LOL ;)
I walked up to the '91 Bronco for sale, looked at this and said "I'll buy it"...
...took the picture the next day. :)
Turns out it was purchased in Tucson and had stayed around this area.
It wasn't garage kept because the dark paint faded and so they got it
re-painted. :/ The clear coat under the new paint is coming off and so
it's now revealing a "real cool looking faded factory paint" that would
have looked better than the new paint job -ever- did, IMO.
Working on that old rust-belt stuff is something I wouldn't do. :(
I'm plain-ol' not as dedicated to this old stuff as you guys are.
Sad but true.

Anybody got a part number for a MSD cap for a 460 with stock distributor?
