Just wanted to throw this out there to get opinions from FTE. I recently purchased a 1976 F100 Ranger, LWB, 360FE, C-6, Factory installed air, with 80k ACTUAL Miles on it for ONLY........$500.00!!!!! And Drove it from Nashville, TN home with NO PROBLEMS!!!! It had been parked in a barn for about a year. After I bought it, I drove it to a family members house and crawled under and around it. Found a folder full of receipts where a lot of work had been done: new brakes, drums, calipers, shoes/pads, cam, lifters, pushrods, alternator, starter, voltage regluator, Master cyl.. All the front end bushings had been replaced, and a brand new gas tank installed. It does have a few ( and I mean FEW ) small issues. I had to replace the heater core, and the instrument panel lights don't work.(Probably headlight switch) Has VERY MINIMAL rust (a small spot quarter sized on bottom of each door, and a spot on each side of the bed at rear near where the bumper comes around ) Other than that, the body is pristine. No rust in floorboards, cab corners, or in floor of the bed. All in all, I feel like I made out like a Bandit on it. Your input would be appreciated. Thanks!
I picked up my 70 in the same mechanical condition for $650 but it has a few rust issues... the worst is rusty roof rails. Otherwise, it's vintage steel and wearing patina.
Both my rigs have FEs and don't tick at all. Your issue might be from lifter preload or a slightly bent pushrod which is creating a hair of slack. Here's an article for your consideration: FE's That Bend Push-rods, A Dirty little Secret .: Articles
And maybe do a search or post a thread in the FE engine forum to see what the clatter is about.
I'm building up parts for low-buck upgrades using new and JY parts - 3G alternator, OEM front sway bar, power disc brakes, DJM lowering beams, steel wheels/dog dish hubcaps, modern rubber, etc. Simple.
GREAT DEAL!
Another possibility on the tick, a small exhaust leak.
I would think that a strong possibility. When the r/h exhaust manifold gasket went on my 360, it made a ticking sound.
Sounds like a great deal on the truck, especially with all that work done. The dash lights on my truck often go out as well, but I can usually get them back on, by kind of fiddling with the headlight switch dimmer.
You did not get a deal you stole it, lol. If you drove a $500 truck from one state to another and did not have a problem, well of course you got a deal.
And you know it, you were just bragging about it, I don't blame you one bit. The heater core was the "Ford Lords" attempt to keep you humble.
Welcome to FTE and when you brag, post a pic, cause we all love truck ****!

Sir,
I did post pics of the truck. They are on my user profile! And yeah, I admit, I was bragging on it!!!!!!! Thanks, Guys!
Dash lights could be light switch, but the wiring system used by for on these trucks doesn't age well in the dash cluster. It's a printed circuit and doesn't fit well to the plug that goes into it. Looking now for a thread here for a fix and ran across your thread. I have a 77 F 100, snatched the 302/auto and put in a '85 300/T-18. Got mine for FREE all original, cherry, paid $250 for the donor truck.
But ..... if you can just bear the pain of it another month, I'll be in Ga. and gladly take it off your hands and reimburse you your $500 Christmas-NewYears week.
