So I was in the parking lot of a department store getting ready to leave and went to start my Bronco. There was a little hesitation, so i turned the key back and pressed the gas down and tried to start it again. It started but then it didn't idle right and shut off. I open the hood and my air filter element/housing went up in flames. Luckily there was a security guard driving around and saw what happened and had a fire extinguisher to put it out. After it cooled down and on close inspection there were NO leaks from the fuel line, the mounting gasket or anywhere else.
I'm thinking I flooded the carb and somehow it backfired afterwards igniting the extra fuel which started a fire and set the paper element in flames.
I haven't the foggiest what really happened. Any suggestions, ideas?
