Before I start rebuilding the suspension on my 2wd '83 F250, I'm looking one last time into donor trucks to convert over to 4x4. I've found a few 4x4 F-250's donors locally, but none have the same engine/trans as my truck. If I decide to bite the bullet and buy a donor truck, I'll either be swapping my sheetmetal and engine over to the 4x4 chassis, or just using the 4x4 suspension and axles on my 2wd frame with some frame horn modifications. None of that is of much concern, but I'm trying to figure out what transmissions bolt up to what engines...
I've got a 351w and C6 Automatic. If I found a parts truck with an automatic transmission and a 4.9 I-6, 460 BB, 6.9 or 7.3 diesel, will that transmission bolt up to the 351w?
Right now my eyes are fixated on an '87 F-250 4x4 with a Diesel and Automatic. Being that this truck is a regular cab like mine, swapping the sheetmetal and my engine over would be a walk in the park. But I'm just not sure about the transmission.
Darn. I was hoping the diesels shared the 351w pattern. Figured I could do this 4x4 thing cheaply, but looking around craigslist all the transmissions with t-case's cost more than the damn donor truck. Hmm, maybe I can part out all the stuff I won't use and buy the right trans/case. Thanks
Ken, not to question your knowledge, But I thought the Modifieds(351m&400m) were based off the Cleveland block? Therefore, wouldnt have the same bolt-pattern as the Windsor blocks.
Ken, the Kiwi, is correct. The 351M and 400 share the big block bolt pattern. And, btw, there was the FE bolt pattern for the 360 and 390, and others that I've forgotten.

The 351C was the odd ball of it's engine family by actually using the windsor bellhousing pattern, while the 315M/400 got the 385 series pattern. No idea why.....
