I would like some opinions on which advance springs and bushings to use on my 390 for max performance. I have a new MSD R-to-R with factory heavy springs. Initial set at 12 degrees and would like 36 total all in by 2900 RPM. Here are the details:
74 F100 SWB C-6 PS
3:25:1 9" Open ( will change to 3:89 Locker)
670 Holley Avenger, Performer RPM, Stock Heads with Adj Rockers, 280H Comp cam, headers with an unrestrictive dual exhaust system, windage tray and of course the MSD Ready to Run including MSD coil and wires.
Try using the blue 21° stop bushing and the two light blue springs for a starting point. Rev engine until timing stops advancing and adjust so that you get between 34-38° total advance (try and find a sweet spot it seems to runs better between those). This will put your initial at 13-17°.
Once you have it down, you can use lighter springs say light blue/light silver and see if you don't get any ping. Once/if you find yourself pinging, back off to the next fastest rate.
Thanks Sleepy445FE ! But now I have another question to ask. I installed the 2 light blue springs and the 21 deg blue stop bushing, set initial to 15 deg. Without the vacuum advance hooked up and plugged off I get 36 total. Perfect. But with the vacuum advance hooked up it reads about 49 degrees. Is that right? I took it for a spin and it seems to run great, no pinging at all.
