How much boost from a banks sidewinder?
Hey,
I'm new to this forum and don't have alot of experiance with diesel engines, so please excuse my ignorance. I just bought a '92 f-250 with a 7.3 IDI and a Banks Sidewinder kit and I am trying to figure out what kind of boost I should expect to see from it. The truck is a 5 speed and the most I have ever seen the guage hit is about 6 psi, and that was in 5th gear at about 2500-2600 rpm. Is this normal or should I be getting more out of it? I have seen other threads about guys getting 25+ psi... What is a typical normal boost pressure?

Non wastegated, it seems to be an older system than the pictures I have seen on the banks website too. It has a large flat rectangular air filter housing with the sidewinder logo on it, not the black round cylindrical type I have seen in pictures...

boost is dependent on load and exhaust back pressure.
normal driving you will see very little boost.
towing 17,000 lbs up a 15 degree grade with no muffler, and you may see 16 lbs boost.

you could check for any pre-turbo exhaust leaks or any boost leaks. that 25psi is out of engines outher than IDI's. need some intense mods to do that safely and reliably.
welcome to the forum btw.

Would an exhasust leak AFTER the turbo make a difference? I haven't seen anything before the turbo, but there is definitely a large one under the cab of the truck... I was just thinking it might possibly alter the proper flow? if that makes any sense?
