I haven't had any previous problems with my 86 F250 carburator until today when the choke decided it wouldn't return the engine to a normal idol. I looked at other posts about problems with automatic chokes, understand a few trouble shooting suggestions but wondered if there is anything unique to the standard Ford straight 6 engine and carb I might not be aware of. Any suggestions out there as to where I should start checking? I assume the choke is integral.
Usually the choke is adjusted by the spring inside the black case at the top of the carb. Theres also the fast idle adjustment at the back of the carb, near the idle adjustment screw.
If it just stopped working out of the blue then you might want to check if you are getting power to the terminal at the choke cap. On a stock setup I believe you need to have the engine running to check it for power.
But first you might want to make sure that it is actually the choke that isn't coming off and not just something else inflating the idle speed. Remove the air cleaner and see if the choke flap opens or not after the engine warms up. If it does open and function correctly then you probably have a vacuum leak or something bumping up the idle speed.
