Steering Dampner Replacement

While changing the oil I noticed my steering dampner rod was bent. So I got a new dampner schock and replaced it. Now my question is, the mount for the rod end is atached to the tie rod (I think its the tie rod but not sure) and faceing the front of the truck, so after conecting the body of the shock to the mount on the pasengers side when I conected the rod end it was at an angle facing the front of the truck rather than being parallel with the rest of the steering rods. is this correct or is my mount on wrong?
this is a 2004 4x4 all stock. I can see how he rod would bend at this angle. Thanks
