My Explorer is a 2004 V-6 auto trans. The trans shifts differently then any other vehicle that I have owned. Normally in an auto trans vehicle you either hardly feel it shift or it shifts firm & you can feel each shift without any lag.
On my Explorer when it shifts it's almost like a standard trans where you can feel each shift leave the gear, pause for just a second & then engage into the next gear. It does this in all gears. It's not too rough or problematic but seems very strange for an auto trans.
I have already dropped the pan, changed filter, replaced with Mercon V. Yes I did add the correct amount while it was running on a level surface in park at 110 degrees +or- a few. The fluid and pan was clean, no excessive clutch material, just a small amount on the magnet in the pan. The pan was not black & nasty but was very clean to my surprise.
So, how does your trans shift? is this normal or is there a potential problem? No CEL or O/D flashing. Just concerned. There are articles all over the internet about this being a junk transmission. I would like to hear from owners about how their transmission shifts, how many miles you have on the original trans, etc.
OUr 5 speed auto in the 2002 does not do that. I have heard others say the newer 6 speed does similar to what you describe, and it is somewhat normal... You have a 6 speed ?
I think you really have the 5 speed, just like our 2002... If you have changed the oil and filter and no change.. I might be temped to have the dealer reload the shift program into the computer and see if that fixes anything ?
The usual shift problem with this trans is a flare between 2nd and 3rd. (or is that 1st and 2nd?) The revs climb and it slides into the next gear. Do that a lot and clutch material will build up quick.
A firm positive shift is your friend with this box. Not sure your's is OK, but it does not sound like the "standard" problem.
