I did this about a month ago but I am just getting around to posting pictures. The headliner is from Dennis Carpenter, I also painted my mirrors black, I think it goes better with the truck. Also, my helper was the perfect height for holding up the headliner when I was installing it.
Good job on the headliner...looks clean! Great pic of your helper. He looks like he enjoys sharin' the work load . Thanks for posting your progress pics.
Hey Colin,
I like that headliner - looks great! I even like that tan color - I haven't done mine yet - Hmmmm - How bad was it? One beer? Three beers?
I thought for a second that was an old Houston Oilers shirt - Nope looks like hockey.
So that's exactly the color and style I'll need. Like the finish and look. I trust that with capable - and correctly sized help - the install is straightforward?
Thanks for the compliments everyone. It was a very easy install, everything fit like it should and it was just a matter of getting everything lined up. I had to take a break so I could finish my beer. My little helpers are a big help and love the old truck, my other helper didn't want her picture taken but she was there handing me tools.
I find it interesting you say the install of the stock-type headliner is easy. There's been other reports here of things not going so well, and even in the catalogs they recommend going with a different setup due to the difficulty of the installation. Comments?
I second Wayne's comments. I've heard several complaints about people botching the install of stock cardboard liners because they are tough to put in. I personally would prefer to have a stock one over ABS plastic if it can be put in without stress medication. Can you maybe outline the method you used to shape it, install it, etc.? You did a fantastic job and it looks excellent!
I never heard about the installation being difficult, which is probably a good thing. This is how I did my intsall. The headliner came in a foot square box and when I was going to do it, it was rolled up tight so I left it on the garage floor for a month to let it out. You do have to be carefull putting the headliner up to the roof as it it a bit tight but, not unmanagable. I put the front in first, then got everything squared away above the doors and windshield and then put a screw in the front on both sides to keep things even. The headliner still wanted to roll up on me so that is where the kids came in real handy. Next I put screws in the middle of the door and then in the support bracket in the middle of the roof and I just kept working to the back of the cab. It was that easy to install and all the pieces fit like they should which was real nice. There was no searching for the flanges to put the screws into. I was afraid after 60 years things might not fit the way they should but everything lined up right. The only other thing I can add is that it is a 2 person job.
