posted before for this but cant seem to pinpoint exact spot yet of noise.99 5.4 161,000 miles now.when i start it i have the "diesel" knocking sound at start-up.it does get quieter as it runs however when your on the gas you can hear a "tapping" at higher rpms but at low rpms it has a different sound more like an exhaust leak.all noise goes away after letting off the gas. underneath the truck at start-up the noise is at starter back oil pan area but seems to travel thru the exhaust.when its warm you still a little noise at idle but very little noise under neath you really have to listen for it.i did have broken stud but i replaced all that but didnt put new manifold on.it has done this for over 8,000 miles now(since i bought it).
sorry for the long post.
well this weekend i took off dust cover and looked at flex plate.cant see much but its not cracked at bolts.guess time for the garage.they are not getting way with thats normal cause my warranty runs out in march.
the 5.4 was notorious for piston slap, as some of them had under sized pistons. My 99 f150 had a new motor installed by ford at 30,000 miles. The sound goes away when warm because the rings heat up and things expand. Any ford dealer telling you this normal is full of boloney.
I doubt that Ford would cover w warranty repair at 161k miles. Basically, if a compression test shows no issues and a leak-down test is OK, just keep driving the truck.
If you think that there may be internal issues other than piston slap, get an oil sample analyzed at your next oil change. That can tell you a lot about your engine's internal condition.
teah if its piston slap im not worried. i called the warraty company and they said have a second opinon from a garage of my choice and they will pay them also.i think its getting louder under load and lasting longer at start-up.im just **** on noises and maybe im just thinkin its getting louder. thanks for the help will update when i get it in.
stopped by garage today to have my wifes tire plugged and ask my mechanic what he thought.now it was warmed up but he said exhaust leak.he said bearings wont quiet down when they warm up.so i got to looking and my manifold on the passenger side(where i replaced a stud)is away from the head enough to put my fingernail in.i never thought a leaky manifold would be that loud when cold!
thanks for the help everybody this site is great.
