I have a 2003 f-250 with the 5.4 motor. The truck just hit 39000 miles. I have the oil change at the dealer (free of charge every time) at 3000 miles. lately I have heard a knocking sound when i start it up and after the first mile it seems to go away. I'm not sure what it could be, Sorta sound like an exhust leak type sound, but since it goes away i suspect it isn't. Could it be a lifter problem? I purchased the extended warrenty when i bought the truck. Hopefully something like this will be covered if it gets worse. It also might be the gas maybe i guess. Any suggestions ? Thanks Jeff
I had the same noise on a 99 f 150 5.4 and it was broken exhaust manifold bolts. It would stop leaking when it warmed up. Look at the studs and see of thers are any missing. If you lift the fender liner it is easy to see.
Exhaust is a possibility as is piston slap also lifter. Make sure to use motorcraft oil filter. Exhaust will get worse when you power up a hill when cold. Many will almost go away when warm. I had a cracked manifold that would almost be quiet when it got warm.
Take it back to your dealer ASAP. the more you drive it the more damage it can do. You may check your oil filter and make sure they put the right one on it with an anti-drain back valve. This sounds stupid but it works, take a sawn off broom handle and put one end on top of the valve covers and one end to your ear and see if you hear anything in the valve train. you can also do this on the oil pan to see if you hear a rod knocking. Hope your problem is nothing serious and your dealer takes care of you. Good Luck !!
