i have a 97 f150 4x4 with the 5.4 in it well over the past couple months i kept noticing i was running low on oil. So i started looking to see if it was burning it i haven't seen any smoke and im seeing no leaks. Does anyone know what this might could be im using highmillage 5-30 like im supose to i change it every 3000 miles i am stuck on what it could be. i got told it could be a blown intake gasket?? but i have no clue
Here is some insight.
....The truck is getting old and up in mileage.
....They will often take a quart or more in 1000 miles depending on how hard the motor is run.
....Unless you removed the cats, the cats run at a very high temperature and burn off a lot of what is in the exhaust before you will notice it.
.
....My opinion is it's normal at this stage.
.
....My 4.6 has 163,000 and will use some oil depending on how hard I run it over the road.
..Around here everybody runs the major highways at 70 /75 mph and sometimes a bit faster. This will cause these motors to use oil at a faster rate unless you go slower and get in their way..
..What often happens is in trying to go with the flow and running hills, the transmission down shifts out of lockup or OD and the RPM goes upwards of 2800 to 3000 rpm for short periods of time, so oil will be used at a faster rate and becomes a 'thought' disconnect when you look at the dip stick level, later on.
Good luck..
Replace the PCV valve with a Ford replacement, they can suck up some good amounts of oil when they go bad. You didn't say how much it was using but as said above 1qt every 1k-1500 is "normal"
