Got a question i just got back from a 2000 mile road trio w/2002 f150 4x4 5.4. My truck has 130k and it runs awesome, doesnt smoke and starts right up everytime. The prob is after 2k miles since l last oil change i just checked my dipstick and the oil level is very very low. Does anyone have an idea of what the prob is. thanks
catan70 I hope someone has some info b/c my wife's 2000 Xpe (145K miles) is the same way! It runs great, none of the oil burning smell at the exhaust or oil stains in the driveway, but uses around 2 quarts or more b/t oil changes. I don't drive it much but the only thing I've noticed is that occasionally while driving I'll catch a whiff of the smell when you spill oil on a hot exhaust manifold while refilling oil.
My guess is there's an oil leak somewhere but since they put the dang motor back so far I haven't been able to locate it yet. Any info would be appreciated.
Well if it is touching the dipstick it is 2qts or less low and for 2K miles on that old of an engine it is in the normal range. Mine has used a few qt's between changes since 60K miles or so.
Yeah Galaxie I agree, but where is it going? catan70 & I both don't have the classic blue smoke exhaust you get from oil burning & mine is not leaking in the driveway either. You'd think 2 quarts would be noticeable in the driveway or running down the engine, underside. Also the smell of oil burning occassionaly makes me think it's running down somewhere & burning off before it hits the ground.
I wonder if there's not a common place for gasket failure on these motors?
