Hey all, this is my first post to the forums . I just recently bought a 79 F250 Ranger XLT with a 400M and a 4spd which I believe is an NP435 mated to a 205 transfer case. Anyways, I have noticed the truck makes a grinding sound (and feeling) while in third gear and third gear alone. I don't believe it to be a problem with the syncro because it shifts just fine but once in gear it makes a slight grinding sound and feels rough, almost 'sandy' (for lack of a better word). Anybody have some sorta idea what might be up? Possible missing gear tooth? Bad bearing? Or something completely different? Any advice would be great!
Thanks for the info! I bought a rebuild kit for it anyways just because I figure I might as well go through everything if I'm gonna break the transmission open. The more and more I think about it I'm kind of expecting to see a missing tooth on third but we'll see. When removing the cover of the transmission from inside the vehicle am I going to need to drain any fluid first? Or is it ok to just pop the lid off? I appologize if these questions have been asked in other threads but I really appreciate the advice!
