Hi fellas I just was given a 3g alternator from a fella who i helped by cutting a bunch of wood, he blew up his 95 Taurus, but just 2 months prior he bought a new motor-craft rebuilt 3g alternator 175.00 top of the line rebuilt....so he gave it to me and said its nearly new ,which it is less than 500 miles, now I have a 92 ford 460 1 ton F350 4x4, with the 2g alternator that is getting weak I replaced it with this nice 3g did the mega fuse new 4gage wiring etc...but the tension bracket does not fit the new alternator the bottom long bolt hole is fine,,, its where the bracket where the tension bolt goes through , the newer 3g is a little wider...what bracket will fit this ?....any ideas from those who have done this upgrade with this year of truck...thanx fellas....ok update here ...what I need is a 8.25 pivot bracket any ideas which will fit a 92 460???
I'm not sure about your serpentine bracketry, but when I put one in my V-belt truck I had to bend the tensioner arm to change the offset.
Did you need to drill and tap the threaded (tensioner) ear for a 3/8" bolt?
Hi and thanx for the get back....I really should of done more studying of the job I was doing ...I just figured that with all the articles I was reading that my 92 F350 460.....ANY 3g out of mid 90 Taurus would drop right in, well I went to my friends and he gave me a 3g out of a 95 Taurus but, it has 8.25'' ear spacing and not 7''....my bracketing is one solid steel plate with a half moon slot where the tension bolt goes through... the bottom l fits perfectly bolt goes through fine it is just the top tension bolt hole is to wide for the tension bracket .....I was told that the 460 will take a 8.25 no problem in my year but I am now trying to see if maybe they changed the tension bracket in anyway ....man this Alternator is in excellent shape hat to give it up I might have to get a 7" and see if it fits...any way I am 62 and thought my difficult wrenching days are over....NOT!
OBTW....I didnt redrill anything I just got a metric bolt that was no prob.
Hi Kemicalburns..yes I have heard it is a great way to go...I pretty much built all my stuff it is real easy , heating tourch... soder etc. fuses were easy to find fuse case was the only thing I had to order...connecter that ran out the back of alternator was given to me by a fella that can make them up...4gage wire and 175 amp fuse....everything is ready to go I just need to make the darn thing fit.

I see...
I think the 8.25" comes out of the 3.8 V6 and the 7" out of the 3.0.
My adjuster bracket is an arm with a slot. It can pivot to accept the wider alternator.
I didn't like the fact that the 8mm bolt was so sloppy in my 3/8" adjuster slot so I just tapped a bigger hole in the ear of my alternator and used my original bolt..
Thanx again for the input guys...what I found out is the case size are the same and both put out 130 AMP...so I just sold the one I had for 75.00 went down to napa and got one for 175.00 100.00 my dead presidents....I got there life time warranty one it had the smaller spacing..fit my old 460 like a charm...actually with the correct part it was fun to do ...gage dont fluctuate and my power windows go up and down faster than ever before.
What I would like to add here if anyone wants to do this upgrade in my opinion anyway is I just found out where I work with 3 guys that have done this, 2 have diesel in their blood and 1 is a gas nut like me,, all said it would be good to get one out of a junk yard u-pull it etc...then find a reliable re-builder and have it rebuilt..main reason is because one of my Buds got one out of a wrecking yard for 25.00 set it up enjoyed it for approx 3 weeks then took a tip with his f350 pulling a 30ft tip out got half way over the Tetons and his junk yard alternator went out...he left from Oregon he told me the car he got it out of had approx 120,000 on it...he ended up buying a new one for approx 200.00 he could of got his rebuilt for approx 55.00 and could of saved a heck of a head ache...weather was great so he did enjoy the trip but if he went Elk hunting and that would of happen..he would of been in deep do-do ...OK next job is Headers but that will be in mid June.
