I lost all spark about a month ago. I changed the icm today. had to pull the disty. made 3 marks, one on the disty to block, one where the rotor was pointing, and the other on the manifold from the back of the cap. , So I did this all today this hour, got it all back in.. truck fired righht up. But now its blowing an assload of rich smeliing smoke and has severe valve knock, liek theres no oil in the rig??? I know I could be off a degree or so, Would bad timing cause this to happen? Ive seen the smoke but never the knock. and the truck was running fine when it broke down..

Pull the spout and set the distributor at 10 degrees with spout removed with a timing light. To me sounds like way too much advance. If you don't have timing light, keep backing off dist. turning counter clockwise until things smooth out, but you really need to check and set as described above.
thanks . Ill have to dig out the old craftsman light lol... so wierd it went right back in the way it cameout, Thanks for the response bud. Im still new to the dyi mechanics, so im learning more everyday.

Whats your oil pressure ? you could have a problem with the oil pump shaft that goes into the bottom of the distributor ...Lew
What's this spout I keep seeing pop up? I might have to put in and time a new dist and this is new to me and I'd like to be able to time at home.
....The spout is a jumper that needs to be removed to set the base timing , by removing the spout it disables the computer advance , it should by the left fender below the master cylinder , its just a plug that pulls out of the wiring harness....Lew

Yes...this is a good point as well the bottom of the distributor engages the oil pump shaft....but that wouldn't explain the rich smelling smoke, as in the spark is occuring at the wrong time and leaving a bunch of fuel in the cylinders.
What does that mean?...it always would smoke in the past?
