distributor o ring leaking still

Been having a problem with the distributor leaking. originaly it was not leaking. I rebuilt the motor the o ring was brittle, replaced it and now it leaks.

I have tried several O rings, all same result. any suggestions?

Well my first thought is to use gasket sealer.
Or
Make sure your PCV is functioning and properly
Hooked up.
Possibly too much crank case pressure.

+1 on both of the above. My thoughts exactly.

well make sure you use a hose from both valve cover vents and "T" them together and from the "T" to the Carb intake port. make sure they go to a good vacuum source.
i would use the copper high temp RTV on the O ring also. let it dry before running the truck.

get a gasket like this one. and double up if need be. or RTV it. it sits flat on the engine.
can you take a pic for me of where it is leaking and the o ring.

I am new to this thread but have the same problem. I recently put a rebuilt 390 in my son's 73 F250 and have had a distributor gasket leak since putting it in. I put a new PCV on with the new motor.
- I put a new beveled gasket on the distributor to rule out the gasket and it still leaked
- I added copper RTV to build up the gasket around the intake and it still leaked
- I just bought another PCV but the existing was not stuck...we shall see

Any other ideas? This is becoming annoying since the engine is running great other wise.

Thanks in advance. TXHighboy

You sure the front if the intake isn't leaking down into the distributor hole? It's very strange for you to have a leak there. I wouldn't use RTV unless you never want to adjust timing again!

Definitely seeping from intake hole for the distributor. Other than the PCV, would a faulty breather cap on the valve cover make a big difference to the pressure? Will send picture tomorrow when my son comes over. thanks

If either of you guys had a crankcase vent problem it would be gushing from the front and rear mains, oil pan gasket and blowing the dipstick out before it caused a leak at the distributor.

I would double check the intake gaskets.

Well I found my problem. The engine was rebuilt by a friend and someone put a oil breather cap on the left valve cover instead of the matching PCV. I ended putting a T off the vacuum on the carburetor, installed the matching PCV and connected it to the T inlet and BINGO...no oil leak! Both sides have a good solid vacuum with a PCV and this is venting the crankcase properly. Hope this helps the next guy. BTW, I found many threads on google to other sites that listed distributor leaks. Good luck!

So you are pulling vacuum from both valve covers? Wouldnt that create a vacuum inside the crankcase as opposed to just ventilating the crankcase; ie instead of pushing oil out past the rear main like you might with no pcv you might draw air inside the crankcase from there?

crankcase vacuum

2 things I have seen from pulling a negative pressure on a crankcase,
You may experience a "back fire" on decelleration or if the breather hole is plugged on the fuel pump the diaphram will collapse and the pump stops working. I know this sounds weird but it can happen. Kenny
