Explain the need to get sample from petcock? Have had nitrites checked by Ford dealer and at oil svc ctr--both of them dipped the stick into the degas bottle.

I just bought a 6-test kit from Intl house and it also stated to get sample from petcock--maybe some setups have 'dead' fluid in the overflow container?
Joe
I actually bought a bottle of 50 strips directly from them some time back and noticed the difference with instructions regarding the petcock. Now most of bottle is expired so I need to buy more.....
Here is from Ford Service Manual:
"SECTION 303-03: Engine Cooling
#3 NOTE: The coolant sample may be collected from the degas bottle only if the vehicle has been driven at least 1600 km (1000 miles) since the last time coolant was added, otherwise collect the coolant sample from the radiator draincock. NOTE: The coolant sample must be between 10°C (50°F) and 54°C (130°F) when tested or inaccurate readings may result.
Collect a coolant sample from the degas bottle using the syringe or drain from the radiator draincock."

they are probably referring to the drain petcock on the radiator, its on the drivers side..under your bumper.
Well, since Ford says the degas bottle (bnmccoy) is ok if no AF added in last 1000 miles, should be ok. Don't care for trying to adjust the drain for a few drops. Glad to hear there wasn't a problem in the way it was done before.
Thanks.

Tested my coolant today truck is a 10' 350, 27,8xx miles, all is good, moly was 0, nitrates 1800 and the glycol was -50 to -60. I used the fleetguard test strips, only time I have ever added coolant is when I change my filters on my coolant filter, I use ford gold and distilled water at a 50/50 mix.
The degas bottle is not an overflow or recovery tank, it has constant circulation and is a perfectly valid testing point. Don't bother "taking a sample" get a long hemostat, clip the test strip on the end and just dunk it in the degas bottle.
Don't get the bottle of 50 strips unless you have a fleet to test, they will expire on you since you only need perhaps a half dozen per year even testing at every 5k oil change which is what I recommend since it's fast and the strips are cheap.

That's interesting... Makes it tough for me because dealer does all my maintenance. All fluids are at operating temps by the time I get there (200 DEGREES)
I bought a 4 pack at a local truck parts place for like 6 bucks..... I sampled mine after driving the truck up to temp and let it cool, took a sample and let it cool for another 15 minutes in the house. Air temp in the house was 67* F
