I would eventually like to do a sas on my ranger. and im trying to gather all the parts and info I need. So i want full hydro steering but my ? is if im driving and my motor cuts off will i have any steering with the orbital valve.
So if im going down the interstate and my motor shuts off i have no steering? (and yes full hydro is legal in my state)
most setups are driven off the accessory drive belts on the engine so no running engine no steering. they do make electric pumps to run the hydro, i believe kjett has one on his mud racer, but idk how they work in a full time street driven rig.
don't quote me on it, but i wanna say i read about an orbital that still manually moved fluid so you'd still have steering in a loss of power situation, but i haven't read up on hydro in a few years. i'm sure you'll get some better answers thrown out in a day or so.
I run a Sauer-Danfoss ospm-40 on valve. It's a non-reactive (so no feel from the wheels), but will go into a bypass mode when no power is given to the pump allowing me to maintain full steering control that is like a between power and manual steering on a stock setup. Not sure I'd run my same valve on a street truck. You may want invest in an AGR or similar deal for keeping you road legal as my deal is for a John Deere tractor.
If you run the correct orbital you will still have steering, but it won't be fun from what I've read. The more likely scenario is losing a line to the ram, then you have some big problems. Hydro assist is the better option for a street driven rig.
now that you have an avatar and a garage i can see you have a basically stock ranger. wtf are you thinking you will gain with hydro or hydro assist???? steering is the last of your worries as everything else in the front end will give up the ghost before you have to worry about a 33'' or less tire overcoming the steering. seriously, put down the magazines and read up on this forum and many others. don't waste your money in places it isn't needed, and i'm not trying to be an ***, i'm being serious.
