Hi all, i'm new to working on an explorer and to this board.
Anyway i was checking the rear diff (truck was level) of my ex 4x4 xlt and when i opened up the check plug (the smaller plug 3/4 of the way up the diff) the lube poured out on me... i was not expecting this... also the ford book called for 75w-90 lube and lsd friction @ 4oz. but the Haynes calls for 75w 140??? why so different?
75-90 is old spec. 75-140 is the new spec. Should be up to the 3/4 inch plug as you said, not overfull. FRiction modifier is neeed if you have a limit slip rear end, and can also help if you have some gear whine noise.
my manual on my 04 calls for 75-90 synthetic but the diff cover has a tag which clearly reads 75-140 synthetic. So I went with what the diff cover had on it. I used synthetic Mobile 1 75-140. $20 bucks a quart, holds 1.75 quarts.
