front and back diff

I have a 94.5 powerstroke turbo,, just bought this truck and starting to do fluid changes, noticed the front was alittle low so i siphoned out the front and walmart looked it up in there books and i believe they said 75/90 and what they had in gallon jug was 80/90 hope that was fine.. The back i took out the bolt and found half inch if silver sludge so im im going to take the cover off clean it up and put back on,, What do you all recommend to put in the back diff?? someone said that putting synthetic in the front wasnt that big of a deal but they would put it in the back,, one buddy said 80/90 in the back too,. said synthetic you do not have too,, ive read alot that they are putting synthetic in,, any ideas??? waiting for answers and hoping to do this today,,, thank you

If you have an F250 the front and back both call for 80w90. If you have a 350 I don't know if it is different but wouldn't think so. A lot of guys on here use 75w140. I don't know enough to say why. Synthetic is not required but is acceptable. If you have a limited slip or "traction lok" rear end then you'll need 4 oz of friction modifier as well. Hope that helps.

And here's a link to a free, printable owner's manual for a 1996 F series.

There's also a diesel owners addendum. Just search for it on google or whatever.

75w-90 in front & 75w-140 in rear. Both require synthetic fluid. The rear will need a bottle of friction modifier if it is equipped with Trac-Loc.

I got 80w90 straight from owner's manual. Let me know if something has changed so I can get mine fixed...

Owners manual says if you change over to synthetic that you have to drain the wheel hubs to but how many of us do that. from factory they do not put synthetic oil in the rear diff.

To this day I do not run synthetic oil in my rear diff, I much rather change it every 30,000miles with regualer oil then run synthetic. I want to get all the junk out like metal filings and what not that plants seeds to destry everything else.

I work on trucks in a fleet shop and I see more diffs blown up from not changing diff oil because they are filled with synthetic and is "oil for life" of the truck unless a major repair is performed on the diff.

So here is my opinion, if you haul heavy and create alot of heat that can break down the oil, then run synthetic. If you just bounce around and haul the occasional load, run regualur oil. Always change your diff oil routinly no mater what you use.

Don't EVER let walmart work on your truck again. Seriously. You'd be better off taking it to the monkey cage at the zoo and letting them do it. They are the most undertrained, underpaid, non tool owning idiots on the planet. Walmart actually requires that they use walmart tools only in the shops. That aught to tell you something.

synthetic is best in the diesels. In place of the friction modifier you can just use royal purple gear oil. They say it has it in it and I believe it. One of our rear ends has had it in there for 350000 miles and the clutches are just fine. All my trucks use it now.

I do not usually recommend it in the front unless you use it a lot. Synthetic has a bad habit of holding onto water. Aluminum rear ends on explorers and a lot of GMS have had some major problems because they don't get hot enough to cook the water out. I rebuilt too darn many of them for water damaged bearings. Just stick with regular gear oil in the front and change it once a year. It's really best unless you really use the 4x4.
