Question on 4x4 usage

I have a 2000 F 350 DRW lariet and it comes with shift on the fly 4x4. The guy I bought it from says you have to lock in the hubs manually. The owners manual does not say you have to in order to run 4x4. Help??

Do I lock in the hubs and then shift, or what?

If the hubs are working properly you do not need to manually lock them. They will lock automatically.

I would suspect that if the previous owner said they needed locked manually, it's because they aren't working properly.

The front hubs are normaly pulled in by vacume with shift on the fly. Inside the hub there are seals and orings that maintain this vacume if any of them are bad they will not pull in. Also if you have a vacume leak going down to the hubs then they will not pull in. It does not hurt to switch the hubs over manually and then throw the switch on the dash to make the transfer case move to 4 wheel drive position. Remember to be stopped if going into 4 wheel low. If going to 4 wheel high you can shift the transfer case while moving.

Vacuum also operates the cabin air diverter. If you have defrost but no floor heat, vacuum is the issue and the ESOF (Electronic Shift On the Fly) module commonly craps out at right about 10-12 years.

If the previous owner plugged the vacuum lines to the hubs because of a leak, then you would need to lock the hubs manually before using the switch. The only way to find out is to try it with just the switch and see what happens.

He said that he had the hubs cleaned a few months ago, they were gummed up? Hard to select over.
