i recently bought a 2004 f250, it has an electronic transfer case shift on it(the cute switch on the dash) is there any way to change this to the standard manual shift? if not, what is the best way to bulletproof this setup so it doesn't short out at the time i need it? not i wanted it in the first place, but bought the truck used. its an auto trans, 6.0.

yes, put a manual tranfecase in it.
The real answer is no.there is no way to make it bullet proof.
I would suggest a few things though
pull the connectors to the shift motor and get some good dilectric grease
put in the connectors and put them back together.
Also change the transfercase fluid often (there is a pump and filter inside )
so you want to keep the fluid clean.
One of the biggest things use the system at least 1or 2 a month to excersize it.It keeps it lubed .
Also the front hubs are the problem 9 times out of 10.
These hubs suck ,there are o-rings within the hub that seal a vacum pulse to alow the hub to lock in and unlock out.
Clean out the hubs and grease them.
The other major malfunction is the vacum pulse controller they go bad.
That's what I had to do thursday , we had 6 inches of snow (the wet stuff) needed 4 wheel drive but the hubs would unlock at the wrong time , leaving me stuck with a 20ft. trailer , lock the huds by hand and had 4 wheel the rest of the evening Fred

When you say they unlock, do you mean when you are already in 4WD and just moving around?
Or, do they unlock 20 seconds after you put the **** in 4x4HI?
After only a few blocks the front end would disgage and I would have to flip the switch from 4hi to 2wh then back . Now the hubs are locked by hand and I have it when I need it .. Fred

That's one (or both) hubs not staying engaged after the vacuum goes away.
That's the hub itself not locking, not a vacuum problem, or electronics.
Either take them apart and lube them and play the 50/50 game, or get Warns or other aftermarket. Either that or pay >$200 EACH for new ones from Ford.
