Anyone ever try/do it ? I've got a box that needs rebuilt, but have never attemped to rebuild one before. Wondering if special tools are needed, and how hard it is to do the job ?
Iv'e done it. Not worth the trouble in my opinion. If it's for a quality vehicle I'd look for a good rebuild/exchange. Theres a company that specializes in upgrading them with things like roller bearing instead of bushings. Red River or something like that. Try a search for rebuilt steering boxes.
The original box on my truck lasted 30+ years. It was working fine but leaked pretty bad.
I got a reman unit form A1 cardone and has started leaking already after about two years.
Lukily, I kept my original box insead of sending it in for a core charge. I'll be sending my original box away to be rebuilt by one of the reputible companies listed above like Redhead or Bluetop. They're more expensive, but there's more to rebuilding them than a new seal and fresh paint.
Might I suggest that you mark your box if you expect it to be the one rebuilt. If just exchanging it doesn't matter but you do know where that one has been. I like to put a couple of punch marks in a location so I am sure I get MY original part back.
Sorry I missed that you are getting a "free one" .... Nice!
