Your buddy got it right on this one, Donaldson AF are good to 500hp and will hold about 7 lbs of dirt and still flow air. I would not put a K&N on my lawn mower if they made one for it.

I concur. I know of a bunch of pretty strong running 6.0's that not only filter great due to the factory filter set up, but look stock (relatively) under the hood. In smog states, a smog guy doing a visual looks for an aftermarket intake first thing.
You would be surprised what a smog guy may overlook (not purposely, of course) if he thinks the truck is stock.
