i have a 2001 ford excursion. i sometimes have a problem with fuel leaking from the fuel filter bowl. it leaks around the cap no where else. i have not used a ford filter and it seems to happen more when it starts to get cold outside. happened on diff brand filter. does not do it all the time. last filter didn't do it. what am i doing wrong. cap is tight but not too tight. do ford filter o-rings seal better? is this a common problem?
Are you 100% sure your fuel leak is from the TOP of the filter? and not from the fuel bowl drain valve? there are a couple of small "O" rings in the valve where in contacts the metal housing that are very prone to leaks until you replace them with the better Viton type that are made to hold up to the new USLD.
Otherwise, you might try a Motorcraft (Ford) filter, Racor, Wix, Baldwin, something like that, and be sure you have gotten all of the old seals out of your housing, sometimes they stick, and wet your new seals with a little Diesel fuel before installing.
i can run may finger around the lid and it is wet there. not leaking anywhere else. all the gasket is removed and it is clean. i always wet the new gasket with lube before i install.

You do NOT have a leak around the cap..... Why would I say that? Because if you did the fuel would be Spraying all over the engine like a fire hose. If it is leaking around the cap... You Will Know It
I believe that your drain valve o-rings are shot and the air that is flowing around the engine is pushing fuel up to the cap. it is really time to over haul the whole fuel bowl with new o-rings, it will take about two hours. Here is where you will get everything that you need.
you know i'm not an expert on anything but i do sometime know what i'm talking about. it is leaking where i said. in the past it has leaked there and i bought a new filter and replaced the gasket. and the leak was gone. now if i needed to rebuild it it would have not fixed it in the past. this time i replaced the filter and it started to leak. was not leaking before. in the past if you watched it you could see fuel come out and run down the side. have not looked this time. i always just thought it was cheap filter o-rings because they where very thin and cheap looking. now i may need to rebuild in the near future. it is not a prob now.

there are two different types of filter o-rings. one is flat on each side and one is beveled on the top. The beveled one may distort and not seal very well. But I am telling you, the pressure inside the bowl will cause the fuel to spray out if it is not on correctly. If the leak is as you discribe, tighten the lid a little more. No offence to you at all in what you see, and if I spoke to soon in disagreement, my apoligies. The 'small' leak, with the vibration of the truck can easily increase in size in a second. When that happens you will be pumping gallons of diesel over the engine in a matter of seconds.
If you want to know if its leaking from the cap, look at the hood. If its wet, its leaking from the cap. Problem solved. When that cap leaks, EVERYTHING gets wet. I know this from experience.
I know the fuel system and its leaks very well as I have combated them for a long time. I have had many leaks, and they all make the fuel bowl wet around the lid. When the fuel leaks it goes into the valley heats up and evaporates. It hovers around in the engine and eventually condenses on things. One thing, being the fuel bowl. Making it appear wet. Trust me. I've done this MANY times on my truck...
I too have had a leak on the bowl and the cap. it was misting fuel all over the engine and pooling up in the valley. it stunk to high heaven inside the truck while driving. I just replaced mine 2 weeks ago and i put a Wix in and it didn't seem to fit quite as nice with the rings as the Motorcraft one did but after reading here I think it might actually be my bowl drain valve rings because my bowl is not wet anywhere but I still see diesel pooling, just a little bit, in the valley.

Overhaul your whole fuel bowl. It can be done in a couple of hours. Yes, your leak is most likely at the drain valve o-rings.So this will mean that all of the o-rings in the bowl are deterating and need to be changed. So why is the fuel not going down the drain tube and under the truck.... but ending up in the 'valley'? The connecting tube at the back of the fuel bowl for the drain, 'pops' right off with a careful pull (don't break the nipple). There are no clamps to keep it really tight. With such a slow drain, it will dribble out the edges of the rubber tube and down the side of the fuel bowl and into the valley.
