I have a 2000 F350 4x4 with V10. I just noticed that the AC Compressor is on whenever the "vent" selector is not set to off. Even if I do not have it set to AC. I can have the vent selector to floor and the temp slider to all heat (full red) and the compressor runs.
yeah, I asked the same thing when I got my truck. Pretty dumb if you ask me, not sure why they did that. I believe if its set to floor/dash vents setting the compressor turns off, but thats it.
someone needs to figure out how to install a manual over ride switch or something so it can be turned off on any setting, probably increase mpg a bit.
I've attached a PDF file with the air flow descriptions from the 2000 service manual. You'll notice that the A/C compressor is enabled in every position except Floor, Vent and OFF. When the compressor is enabled it should cycle normally.
I know it is supposed to run in the defrost position to take out the moisture in the air. I have heard of people unpluging the compresser during the winter months when air conditioning is not needed.
this is good to know, I hadn't really looked into it yet but I though my compressor was staying on when it shouldn't (now I know it's design that way).
You can add a switch to enable/disable the AC clutch. Place a single poll, single throw switch in line with the violet wire at the back of your control switch. Be sure to get a switch rated at at least 10 amps. I put a really light duty one in first and it didn't last very long, overheated and opened up.
Any mpg increase would be pretty much unnoticeable on these trucks. Maybe 0.1 mpg at best in winter. The compressor cycles on and off depending on thermal load, and during the winter, the thermal load is pretty low!
