I ordered my 2012 F450 Lariat on 10/7 with Tuxedo Black. 10/21 It was on hold due to color not available, change to CC Black. 11/3 it was on hold due to color not available.... change back to Tuxedo Black...Today shows "accepted order" but on hold due to a back order on the 4.30 limited slip! Dealer suggested that I order without limited slip since it might be another two weeks. I don't think I want a truck without limited slip. What do you guys/gals think?
I'm beginning to wonder if this is meant to be and if I'm dealing with a dealer that knows his business. I've ordered a few new vehicles and never had this much trouble.
a dealer today in north carolina told me he could have a 450 built and shipped in 8-10 weeks. he did say holidays might slow it down some. what kind of deal did you get on the truck?

At this point, I'm 4 wks into it and don't have a VIN yet. I'm in the same range as you. Invoice is 60,799, truecar best price is 60,094 in my area minus 3,500 rebates 56,594 + TL.
I just ordered a 2012 F450 in tuxedo black as well, on Oct 14th. Tomorrow will be for 4 weeks, I still don't have a VIN either. They have not told me about an holds on the order. I was going to go by there tomorrow to check on the status, I'll ask them about what you said and let you know what they say. Also I thought the 4.30 axle only came as a limited slip, it's the only option on fords website.
I feel your pain. My truck was supposed to be 6-8 weeks. It actually was three months minus one day. I thought I would go crazy checking to see when the VIN would pop up. HOWEVER the time did go by, the truck did come in, and it was the way I ordered it and built the way I wanted. In other words GET IT THE WAY YOU WANT IT!! You will have the rest of your life to enjoy it, and they cost a fortune. I have 4.10 LS in mine and would not have non-LS especially since mine is 2WD. This is my first non-4WD Ford truck in 30 years. I've decided I'm not going out in the mud, or snow to see if the truck can actually move anymore. I have another truck to drive when the weather is bad. So since this is 2WD I at least wanted LS.
Some will say the Ford LS is not any good. I don't know if that's true or not. I just decided what I wanted on the truck and that's what I ordered. I'm the one that has to be happy. Many here say a 3.31 or 3.73 is fine, and they probably are right. I only tow at 60 mph and I love the 4.10LS. The truck gets 19.1-19.5 mpg empty and 10.5-12.1 pulling 5er at 60 mph. The transmisson and engine seem perfect with that speed and rpm. This truck hardly ever comes out of 6th when towing. My 04 F250 FX4 6.0 downshifted all the time. This didn't seem to hurt the truck but it drove me crazy.
A long way to say get what you want, not what the dealer wants to sell you! Best of luck with the truck, stick to your guns....

.
I think I would hate driving a truck like these with 4.30 gears and the subsequent fuel bill. that is what I think.
I've got 4.30 LS in my 450 and get anywhere between 10-14.5 mpg. Then again truck w/body weighs 11,100 lbs. I'd wait for the LS, has worked well in mine. Got me a higher GVW with the 4.30 as well 16,500 truck, 30,000 combo
Thanks for the feedback! I decided to wait it out and keep it the same. It's frustrating, but I agree it's better to get what you want. I thought the only option for the 4.30 was LS too and I've spent so much time building on the Ford website that I was aware the only option for the F450 is 4.30 LS. That's why I was a little shocked when they offered it without as a solution.
Alliebrian9084, I'd like to know what you find out.
bigoltrk,
Talked with the dealership this morning, still not VIN or build date. I asked about any holds or delays associated with my order, he said there was none. The order was clean and had been accepted by ford, its in line waiting to get picked up. He felt that it should get picked up sometime next week and have the truck 3-5 weeks after that. If I get any further updates I'll be sure to let you know.
As you mentioned I do believe the 4.30 LS is now standard in the 450's. I think in the 2011 models it was optional since Im pretty sure I remember having to add it to my order. On the 2012s I didn't see it listed on the options section but did see it on the listed on the invoice print out with no cost next to it.
Sportscraft. Congrats on your 3rd 6.7 truck. or shall i say 1 2011, and 2-2012. lmk how your mileage goes. in comparing your 2012 350. to your 2012 450. Thanks Paul
I know I should have listened to my dad and kept my original truck! But so far on both 450's I get 1 mpg MORE around town then the 350. On highway all trucks were the same with 450 perhaps getting a bit better on hills and 350 getting better if you kept it 55 mph on flats. My 2012 450 was driven over from Colorado so maybe that initial run on the hwy made it break in quicker then the 350???
