Towing

I have a 2011 F150, just purchased, has the 5 litre engine 6 speed automatic. I am looking at this boat, 28 ft Sea Ray, I am told it weights around 10,000lbs. I have to pull it up from Savannah, GA. Once here the boat will stay at marina. Will the truck pull it up through the hills in PA? I live in Upstate NY.

Does that 10K lbs include the trailer? What is the tongue weight going to be? What is the tow rating of the truck?

No 5 liter F150 is rated to tow that kind of weight.

No not true a 5.0L RegCab 8 foot bed with the Max Tow package (IE 3.73 gears and 7 luggers) can tow 10K.

So the question becomes what configuration of truck does Gypsea have?

Trim Level: XL, XLT, etc...
4x4: Yes or No
Cab: Regular, Super Cab, Super Crew
Bed Size: 5.5ft, 6.5ft, 8ft
Gearing: 3.31, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10

7-lug wheels would require HD payload, right?

With that kind of weight, some things to consider;
- Trailer brakes need to operative and in good order
- if electic trailer brakes, you will need a brake controller
- Have the boat and trailer scaled, and have the entire rig scaled. You will be right at the weight limits (DOT of the various states will take notice)
- ensure your route does not take you through any low clearance passes
- Air up your tires so that you have a good load bubble and contact patch. The posted door sticker tire pressure will not be correct if you are towing max weight. Do not exceed the max sidewall listed pressures.

Something to consider, and I ask the question because I do not know the answer.

Can one get pulled over by vehicle envforcement for "unsafe driving" if one is towing beyond the mfg's recommendation?

I see a lot of contractors pulling 20k lbs loads with their 3/4 ton pickups. They are beyond the mfg's recommendation, but they are not "over weight" by scale.

something to consider, also, is the possible legal liability in the case of an accident. Any wreck you are involved in could easily be argued to be "your fault" if you are towing outside the manufacturer's recommendation.

Check your hitch capacity also. many are rated to 10,000 lbs with a weight distrobution set-up. Some are higher, but that would indicate that you have a "max tow" option.

just some thoughts

10K is trailer and boat. I went on line and Sea Ray spec show boat at 8,800lbs. Tongue weight is aroun 300-350lb. When I bought truck dealer said it had tow package and is rated for 10,500. I do have electric brake hook-up on truck, trailer has electric brakes also.

Here's another reason never to believe a salesman. There isn't any configuration with the 5.0 that can tow 10,500 lbs.

Yes, but you said you just bought the F150 right? You're going to take a pretty significant monetary loss if you trade it in at this point.

Why not look at a smaller boat?

You are correct. The max the 5.0L is rated for is 10,000 lbs.
