Yep, the rubber in the windows seems to be altogether different than the doors and goes away in a hurry.

Anyway, please go to the top and vote as the poll is now open!

Built May 82 and the rubber is soft and pliable. Drivers side has one crack where it gets stepped on, and passenger side looks new(relatively).

Window channels almost gone. Rubber window wiper strips almost gone.

Ok, Stang. But, could you please go vote in the poll? I'm gonna have a hard time counting posts, reading to see who has what year, how they think their WS is standing the test of time, etc. Much easier if I can just do the math.

As for the May '82 build date, we may discover early ones that year had the old rubber. Maybe not. But, I had to pick one year to split out by itself so chose '82 as it seems the change, if there was one, came between 81 and 82.

Stang - My apologies if you'd already voted. I hadn't clicked the "see poll results" button and it looked as if no one had voted. SORRY

When I got my 84 a couple years back, it had collapsed weatherstripping. Also had pieces missing out of it. Went to the junkyard, and grabbed a set off of an 86. They are still holding up well.

You never really know if it is just how the truck was treated, if it was different weatherstripping or just defective.

I worked with a lady that worked on the assembly line at Ford for years, and one of her jobs was installing the weatherstripping on vehicles. Apparently they got a batch that was produced wrong and they were still using it and shipping out the vehicles for a month before the management actually did anything about it.

Two of my points of reference are Dad's 81 and my 82. Both spent their whole lives in the same town of 15,000 people in southern Kansas, and at least Dad's wasn't garaged. Maybe the other was garaged, but given the shape of the interior plastic I'd bet not.

The weatherstripping on Dad's 81 is still very good and I know it sat out all its life. On the other hand, my 82's weatherstripping was brick-hard when I got it. So, in this case it isn't how they were treated.

Yes, RW, I find them interesting as well. But then, I'm easily interested.

What shape do you see emerging from the mists of time?

Nothing wrong with being unique. Exclusive. Individualized. Distinctive. Nonconformist.

Or, an oddball, however you prefer to look at yourself.

Stang - IIRC, you said yours was a May '82 build. Don't know when either of mine were built, but it is possible that the changeover, assuming there was one, was later.

But, were I walking through a junk yard looking for weatherstripping and had several choices I'd look at either the 80/81 trucks or the 85/86 ones. It appears something is different starting in 82ish and carried on at least into 83 if not 84.

Final (?) Tally

Looks like the votes have stopped coming in, so here's where it stands after one week:

The following are the percentages of owners who say their weatherstripping is still fairly soft and pliable:
  • 1980 & 81: 80%
  • 1982: 17%
  • 1983 & 84: 40%
  • 1985 & 86: 83%

Looks to me like Ford either changed vendors or type of rubber for the weatherstripping for the 1982 model year, although one owner has an '82 that was built in May and its rubber is still pliable.

And, it looks like they changed back to better rubber in either '83 or '84. In fact, I'd hazard a guess that they may have changed for the '84 model year, meaning that 1984 trucks may have come out with the better rubber. That would be consistent with that pair of years getting basically 1/2 the thumbs-up votes that the 80/81 and 85/86 trucks got. Anyway, just a guess.

Thanks to all that voted and helped satisfy my curiosity. Not that it is important, but I think we know that much more about our trucks now. BTW, anyone want to play Trivial Pursuit with me? I'm said to be the king of trivia. Or, was it that nothing I know is important?
