There is a 1970 F350 Down the street from where I work. It has a wrecker body on it. I have asked over the past few (5+) years if they want to sell it as it has not moved in years (tags say 09).
Today I got the call. "Do you still want to buy this truck." I went down with a buddy and we gave it a solid look over. The shop that has it said that they rebuilt the motor about 4 years and 4000 miles ago. Its a 360. Replaced the valves for unleaded gas. I belive him. They have worked on some of our delivery trucks and also have bought flowers from us. It's super clean under the hood. No oil below. And it's not like they cleaned it up to sell. Lots of dust and dirt buildup.
The wrecker is PTO operated. It appears to work just fine. It is a sling so it would work great for older Ford pickups. It also comes with dollys.
The truck has rust only in the rear of the drivers door. No rust anywhere else. I pulled the rubber boot off the heater and felt inside, no rust or debris. The stone guard is damaged on the left as is the 900 lb 1/2" thick front bumper. The truck is straight with very dull paint and zero surface rust. The wrecker body is painted to match. I don't think it has ever been stored inside.
All the rubber, window felt, etc needs to be replaced. Upholstery is fine. Has carpet not rubber. Miles unknown.
Has all the circa 1970 hazard lights. Has all the tow equiptment, chains, lights for the car being towed, blocks, 4 boxes of 10 plus year old flares, etc.
All 6 wheels are split rims.
One kind of cool thing is that the "Custom" script is on the front fenders up a bit from wher "Camper Special" script would be. Is this normal on a truck that left Ford with no bed?
Front tires are shot. Three of the 4 rears match and are dated 2007. The third is a POS.
I need this thing like another hole in the head but I'm never going to find another one.
He wants $2000 for it. The truck is a good $700-$900 truck around here, perhaps more as the motor is fresh without the wrecker body. So is the wrecker body worth another 1000 or more?
I would post pictures but some Bas$&!# stole my camera out of my work truck last Thursday complete with all the pictures I took in Vegas earlier in the week of my 9 year old son and I having fun in Vegas.
I agree that 2k is not bad for the truck you describe. The rebuilt motor, and the wrecker body make it worth it to me. If everything works like you say, it is definitely worth the asking price.
Well I now own a $1600 F350 tow truck. If my neighbors didn't love me before now they will really love me now.
It needs tires. The wheels that are on it are not all split rims. Only one and it was the spare. They are however 16.5" wheels. The tires are 16.5 X 8.75 and as we all know are not made anymore.
I know nothing about the wheels on this truck. Can I use newer 16" wheels from a motorhome or sim? Any help would be appreciated.
$1600 is even better than $2000. As for the wheels, I have no idea. One suggestion is to measure the bolt spacing on yours, and then go to a junk yard and see what you can find. Maybe a 1 ton dually will have what you need.
I remember reading somewhere that the big three all used the same bolt pattern for their 8 lug wheels. (16.5"). I have not personally checked that yet, so I can't confirm.
