I am pretty handy , i have replaced injectors, valve body and solenoids, so i have done some wrenching with success, and was wondering how hard it is to drop the tranny and put a new one in.
In all reality not much/anymore difficult than anything you have already done, just bigger and heavier. idk if the newer trans are the same but older fords in order for the trans to bolt up the tq converter and the flywheel HAVE to go back EXACTLY the same way or it won't line up right and the trans won't go in(ask how i know).
I replaced the one in my 04 with an 06. I've never replaced one in my life before this one either. I completed it in about 1 long day ( I split it up into 2 days) it seemed to me that it went in easier than it came out. This is because you learn where everything is when its comming out. I think the hardest part was lining and bolting up the torque converter when I was putting it back. A tranny R&R is somthing you should be able to do judging from your past experience you stated. go for it and let us know how it turns out !
Ps... Make sure you buy a good tranny jack. I broke 2 harbor freight cheap O's and almost lost some fingers
