How smooth is your idle?

Just a general question for everyone, regardless of motor. Do RPMs fluctuate in park, drive? Idle RPM speed? etc?

I get a 30-40RPM fluctuation in idle in either park or drive. about 700RPMs in drive, 800RPM in park/neutral.

Anyways, just wanted to see.

351w, 1990, 220,000 miles.

I don't think that there should be a pulse in the RPM's after the engine is fully warmed up. Variation from RPM in park to drive while braked to a stop would be expected tho, due the the transmission load while in drive.

Yes they do, from park, to drive to neutral, the RPM vary a little in every gear of my truck, it has been that way since it came out of the showroom.

When warmed up my 5.8 is fairly smooth except for the lope every 351 i have owned has. While it is warming up it fluctuates about 500 rpm. If the defroster or air is on it does that even if its warm. I can never get a 351 to idle as smooth as the 289 in my old mustang I think it has something to do with the different firing order. It pulls down a little shifting into drive but then returns

My 1990 351 idles so smoothly that I sometimes have to look at the tach to make sure it's still running! They must have done a good balancing job on mine because it's got 150K.

I think he isn't referring to iddling per se, but asking if there are any changes in iddling RPM from gear to gear.

I dont know for sure how many miles i have on this engine maybe 120 or so. Built it myself and i didnt have the rotating assembly balanced it doesnt have a bad shake like its cammed or anything but it and all the work trucks i drove in the 90s had the same slight shake at idle. it goes away as soon as you touch the gas.

actually no, just wanted to see where the engines were idling at and how much fluctuation while in drive or neutral. I know there is a difference from park to neutral.

Jumpy tach basically..
