hello out there, new guy here!
i have a 2000 ford explorer xls, 4l efi. the overdrive light will flash when i drive on the hwy. it doesn't do it when i drive in the city. i have read some of your helpful tips and tried cleaning the maf, and had the tps tested, but no luck on the throttle surging. haven't checked the iac but will now. the trans will surge into overdrive then kick back out and stay in thrid, then light flashes? if i turn the od off when i start it it runs fine, because it doesn't try to shift. any thoughts? dealership says bad overdrive motor?!? $1500 to look at it, bad idea! any help would be greatly appericated
will also be back with questions on 1969 f100, trying to restore
I have a 95 Explorer 4.0 and the overdrive light has come on a couple of times. The first time Ford charged $400 to fix and said a transmission spring was bad. When the light would come on it would start to shift real hard when down shifting and not go into overdrive. The last time it happened I took it home and disconnected the positive battery terminal for about 30 minutes or so. This reset the computer and the overdrive light did not come back on and the transmission shifts normally with no problems.
Hi, the overdrive light flashing is a tranny code, just like the check engine light. Going to a shop to get the codes read will tell you what the flashing indicates. It sounds like the dealer is right and it is related to the overdrive. Go to a reputable tranny shop rather than the dealer and get a quote from them. I just had my tranny rebuilt on my 99 for $1600 Canadian, about $1000 less than the dealer with a longer warrenty. Good luck.
The tranny codes you are referring to... can you get them with a regular EECIV reader? I have a 95 where the OD light comes on every couple of months. I hook the code reader up and everything looks ok, so I disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and I'm good for another couple of months. Just wondering if there is a different method to pulling tranny codes.
I can't say one way or the other if you should be able to read the codes or not. In 98 they switched to the obdII computer system for codes. I know my tranny codes can be read with my engine codes cause my mechanic pulled up a maf sensor fault with a 3rd gear slipping fault. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
hey there new guy, just got eyes poked out haha. well the codes said 4 and 5 gear bad ratio. shop put in rebuilt tran and didnot fix problem, but replaced valve??? and fixed flashing. dealership picked up most of bill, still out $300. NOT BAD FOR NEW REBUILT TRANY AND NEW WARR. not sure about the valve thing though. thanks for the help, it was just probably the battery thing, haha
You know it really is quite amazing how so many people are replacing 5R55Es and A4LD transmissions simply because of a simple valve body gasket failure. Next time the shop says your tranny is dead, tell them to check the valve body gasket. These transmissions are VERY resilient as long as you keep the fluid changed, and watch the clutch bands. The valve body gasket is 90% of times the reason for tranny failures.
Check your tranny fluid level, you may need to top it off. That was the indication I got when the cooler hose came off the radiator fitting and started spewing tranny fluid all over my engine bay. Re-filling the tranny after re-attaching the hose solved my problem.

replace the valve body in tranny and problem will stop for a year.tell them you want to see it being replaced or see the old vave body.deale trust is questionable 200%

Not knowing what year or transmission you are talking about, all I can tell you is that I can buy a new valve body for $150 and it takes me 3-4 hours to replace it (and I work slow). My transmission is a 5R55E and has a catalytic converter that runs under the transmisison that has to be removed first. Any reputable transmission shop should be able to replace your valve body for no more than half that.
I have a '98 that has the same flashing problem. I took it in to the dealer and spent $275 for them to tell me they couldn't find the the problem unless they pulled the tranny! They said it could be something as simple as a $3 O-ring on the inside of the transmission and wanted $1800 to rebuild! The prblem is intermitent and has been that way fro a year now. The tranny shifts a little harder when the light is flashing (especially down shifting). I bought this "exploder" used from an auction and had to put a new timming chain in it a month after I got it. I couldn't afford to put the money into the tranny so I figured I would just drive it till it goes out!
