Stalled, won't start

Hey folks, got an 01 f250 that stopped running while I was driving the other day and won't restart. Had it towed to my mechanic. He said it might be the fuel module. Does this sound right? Wait to start light comes on, tach moves. I do not hear the usual noises I hear when I turn the ignition on. Any ideas? Normal costs if it's the fuel module, etc? Thanks.

Could be the Cam Position Sensor (CPS). They're a $20 part from Ford, and 10 minutes to install with one socket wrench. Notorious for going out like that. In fact, there's a recall on them so the dealership will do it for free. If if turns out that's it, I'd take the mechanic's bill to Ford and have them pay part or all of it.

I'd grab one, run over there, and get under the front of the truck and put it in. If that fixed it, then I'd thank them for giving me a bad diagnosis and a place for my truck to spend the night, and be on my way.

What worries me is he said "It might be the..." Sounds like this guy is not a 7.3L guy. I guarantee the members of this board have a vast better understanding of your truck than he does. Wait for some responses, and take that to him. I would tell him to "wait" on doing any repairs. A year ago my truck had to get towed, and the mechanic who swore he was a Powerstroke Expert said I needed to replace my #8 injector, all my wiring harnesses and gaskets, etc. because "when the code says that, that's always the problem." I towed it home. Turned out my fuel pickup foot broke in the tank, and all I needed to do was to add enough fuel to re-submerge the fuel pickup tube. So much for the "expert diagnosis."

Open the drain valve on the back of the fuel bowl and then turn the key on. If you get a pressurized stream of fuel out the discharge hose for about 20 seconds, then the fuel pump is at least moving some fuel. If it is fuel pump related, a new pump costs around $150 and is located on the frame rail under the truck so it's an easy swap.

True, my mechanic is not a power stroke guy, but I live on eastern long island and there are no diesel guys but for the dealer. The mechanic is my lifelong neighbor and i trust him emphatically. Heck, I was a pallbearer at his wife's funeral, so he ain't gonna screw me. I will check to see if there is a pressurized stream coming out the fuel bowl, but I did get down under the truck and put my hand on the fuel pump and it seemed pretty dead to me.
Sorry for the terse reply re the cps. I'm on the road headed back home to long island from tuscon az in a 76 Mazda b1600 with two DP bikes in the bed. Currently in VA. Good times. Thanks for the help.

It's nothing against your friend. The problem is that unless it's a diesel tech, all they can do is follow the charts on the computer and throw parts at it based on what that says. That's not always effective.

Since you're in an area without diesel guys, then at least you have a friend not trying to screw you and access to FTE. Between that and the access your friend has to tools and scanners, we should be able to figure this thing out.

Don’t count out your CPS yet. My first one lasted about 6 months. I just went by the local dealership today and bought 2 more spares for the glove box.

Chris beat me to it. GLAD TO HEAR YOU CAN TRUST HIM!!! Now, I'm sure some folks here will be able to help. Heck, maybe one of "The Brotherhood" lives close by, and can come assist as well. As mentioned, hopefully the collective knowledge here will help you pinpoint and solve the problem with the least amount of "throwing parts at it."
