ok, here is what happen. i was driving down the road and my 1999 f-350 7.3 starting running really rough. i was not sure exactly what was happening but it was loud and sounded like the RPM's were dropping, i couldnt go faster then 35. so i pulled over and shut it off. it did not sound like a turbo problem but it is a possibility. i first guess is that i ran it out of fuel. although my gauge read 1/4 tank, miles until empty was about 20ish if i remember right. so i got it towed home got to looking at it and tried cranking it over. it would crank but not start. and i noticed my fuel guage read full. so i have been told i need to prime it if it did run out of fuel, so if that is what i do how do i do that????
You should be able to turn the key on and off a few times to fill the fuel bowl. The first thing I would do is take the lid off and see if there is fuel in it. You can fill it with fuel if you want to. If the fuel system went dry, there's really no way to prime it other than using the key trick or filling the bowl. You'll probably be cranking it alot. And while you are cranking it, watch your tach. If it's not reading anything, it's not a fuel problem. It's a cam sensor. 90% of the time when a truck is running down the road and just dies like that, it's a cam sensor.
first thing to do, make sure and get your tank FULL. take the lid off the filter (might want to replace ) and turn the key on while someone watches to see if it is filling with fuel.
if it isn't, you will need to pull the line from the pump and prime it.
I have never pulled any lines to prime my engine.. I just turn the key on (don't crank it) then you should hear your fuel pump running (its located right under the drivers seat on the frame rail). When it shuts off, turn the key off, then do this again a few more times and its primed.
I just installed a new engine and this is all I did and it worked perfectly.
