2002 7.3 Runs for about 20 minutes then just dies.. About 2 minutes before it dies the CEL comes on. Won't start until it cools down then can run for another 20 minutes.
Has a new Fuel filter...Could it be the pump in the frame?
Has at least a half tank of fuel.... That we put in by fuel can
Biggest problem we have!! We are from Canada and I'm sitting in a motel room in Huntsville Alabama right now until I can get this thing home!
I have been form Al to KY today and back.. I'm tired and going to bed...
You don't know the kind of week I have had with Diesels since Sunday!!!
I'll check back here in the morning for some ideas.. Thanks in advance guys!
I've never heard of a cam position sensor cycling from good to bad to good every 20 minutes on a consistent basis.
From "That we put in by fuel can" it sounds like you ran out of fuel and lost the prime and the electric fuel pump sucked a lot of air and overheated? A 20 minute repeating cycle is definitely consistent with overheating and then cooling off of the fuel pump. Does the pump feel very hot to the touch after 20 minutes when the truck shuts off? After the truck shuts off and you just turn the key on can you hear the pump run?
We borrowed one from a garage down the road from where it quit the first time.
We never disconnected the battery's at any time but the light went out the next time it ran.
My theory is that the fuel pump can't maintain the volume .
When we picked up the truck we drove through a couple of small towns and it was fine. I got out on the hiway and ran along at 65 mph and it didn't last long .
So the second time we got going we started out on the hiway at 65 right away and it died within 15 minutes of 65 mph.
We didn't check to see if the pump was hot because it was already 11 pm and we had already been screwing around all day as it was.
Is it possible that the pump breaks down and can't keep the volume and can't maintain the pressure at the filter canister and runs it self out of fuel? How much pressure should we see there?
So it will idle or drive slow all day long, but sputters or stalls at highway speeds consistently? Is it kind of hard to get started after you let it cool down? Sounds like it might be a fuel restriction, but instead of it being a pump issue, I'd first look to make sure the screens inside the mixing chamber (inside the tank) are not clogged up. That's the most common fuel restriction we see.
The code scanner you borrowed isn't compatible with Powerstrokes. You'll need to take it to a diesel repair shop or a Ford dealership to get the code scanned.
If the SES light came on, there is a code, and it's stored.
A drop in fuel pressure will rarely ever trigger a code, and only if the fuel pump is showing an electrical problem. More than likely, your problem is elsewhere. Get the code, and that will tell you where to look for the issue.
We left the truck In Alabama. We had other issues with the Dodge cummins that we took down to haul the ford back( ya ya I know) The dodge died on us in Kentucky and it won't start either... So it got loaded on the trailer and pulled back by a Duramax ( Ya i know i'm going to get flamed on this!!) First trip with the ford we drove about 20 miles... next day we got 8 miles third day we got 5 miles!!!So at this point we parked it to go and try to revive the Dodge... So we hav'nt had anytime to go back yet since its 700 miles from us..
The engine is hurt in the ford anyway.. smokes like a train at an idle and misses like mad...You can tell that there is low compression on one cylinder when you turn it over. It cleans up and runs smooth under boost so I think its got a bad ring pack on one of the pistons. Running down the hiway ( when it runs) there is no smoke and the engine seems to run like a clock... There is oil all over the lifter vally which we never even looked at yet.. I'm sure thats another issue altogether..
Trans won't go into lock up.... The button for the OD don't work!!! This thing is a real pile of***** but it was cheap enough that he can afford to sink some money into it and have a good truck.
