I have 285/75/16's on truck the rears seem to wear out in the center. I have tried diff air pressure in them but still no diff the fronts wear perfect . The tires are D's and i run 55 psi front and was running 50 in rear now 47 still wear out center. I have stock rims could this be the problem, do i need wider rims.
I don't know about the "D" range tires pressure wise. The rim width should be on the rim itself and if your truck came with the narrower tires from the factory the rims could be too narrow, I suppose. See if you can find it stamped on the inside of the wheel and post it up. I am no tire/rim expert for sure--LOL.
I would think if it were rim width related, you'd be seeing the same issue with all four, not just the rear, and I would think it would be more prevalent on the front where you're typically carrying more weight.
I definitely think rim width has an effect, although I don't see why its only happening on your rear tires. FWIW I have a 12.50 tire on a 12" wide rim and my wear is even on the inner, outer, and middle of the tread on all 4 tires.
My tires did this too and they were "D"s. The tire said 50 psi but that roasted the centers fast. I dropped em by 5 psi a few times. And finally ended up at 40 psi for the rears. That stopped the wear in the back. I put the front at 45 psi but the full 50 would have worked i think.
